URGENT APPEAL
One of our partners, Helen Ross, needs your help! She has been diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia, a form of blood cancer. She requires a bone marrow transplant, but has been having difficulty finding a compatible bone marrow donor. We therefore encourage you to register as a bone marrow donor today, particularly if you are of mixed or Caribbean ethnicity.
Registering is free (or very cheap) and requires a mouth swab or blood sample, not bone marrow. Donors never pay for donating. Though no medical procedure is without risk, there are rarely any long-term effects from donating. There is no heightened risk during surgery due to the fact that it is a bone marrow harvest (some donations do not even require surgery). Only five percent or less of a donor's marrow (about 250ml) is needed to save a life. After donation, the body replaces the donated marrow within four to six weeks. The Registry screens all donors carefully before they donate to ensure they are healthy and the procedure is safe for them. One person will guide a donor throughout the entire process.
If you live in the U.S., you can go to www.marrrow.org and register online. If you live in Canada, you may register at www.onematch.ca/registry. If you live in the U.K., please go to www.blood.co.uk. The website addresses of the registries of other countries can be found at www.bmdw.org."
Thank you ever so much.
